Foggy Windows

What Causes Windows to Fog/ Ice Buildup in a house?

Most of the time, you see fog on your windows when the seal fails around your windows. Insulated windows use two panes of glass, with air between the panes. This air — usually argon or krypton — will increase the energy-efficiency of your windows. Energy-efficient windows keep temperature-controlled air inside the home.

Fogs are seen on the windows due to failed window seals. The air which is argon or krypton which is present in between the panes of glass of insulated windows are responsible to keep temperature controlled inside the house. This insulated glass unit (IGU) doubles the R –value of a glass window by increasing its energy efficiency. Foggy windows occur when the seal around the insulated glass unit (IGU) begins to deteriorate.

Almost all windows have an insulated glass unit (IGU) inside of them. An IGU doubles the R-value of a glass window, increasing its energy efficiency. Foggy windows occur when the seal around the IGU begins to deteriorate.

How the window seal is damaged?
  • Humidity:Actual measurement of water vapour is increased in the air due to cooking, showering, improper laundry room ventilation and the furnace humidifier is not set correctlyetc. The typical comfort range is 30-50%
  • Air leakage: There are a variety of reasons they might start to leak air, such as: poor or improper window installation, the weather-stripping/ hardware issues, and there is poor or no insulation around the window frame.
  • Poor performing windows: : ENERGY STAR products have been the standard for energy efficiency windows for many years
  • Expose to water condensation: When the winter climate drops below zero, the moisture trapped inside our homes is drawn towards the window pane where it makes contact with the cold glass. When the window surface has gone below the “dew” point, the water vapour quickly changes from gas to water droplets upon impact. This change appears as condensation and can quickly freeze into ice crystals on the inside of your windows
  • Age of the window
How can you prevent Frost and Ice Buildup on The Inside of Your Windows ?:

1. Seal with Caulking
2. Turn on Your Exhaust Fans
3. Consider Two or Three Paned Glass Windows
4. Use a Dehumidifier
5. Keep Your Home Sufficiently Warm
6. Check on Your Furnace/Water Heater

How can you fix Foggy Window ?

The best way to fix foggy windows is to replace them. On the other hand, there are ways to try to fix old windows such as Replace the IGU unit or you could use a defogging spray to prevent fogging on your windows.
